The Solomon Island Girls Scholarship Program
It's shocking that only 7% of girls in the Solomon Islands graduate from high school. There are multiple reasons why this problem exists but the main reason is the cost of school fees. Financial pressures force parents to choose which children go to the school or not and often the boys are given priority. The alleviate this problem MWT has teamed up with Odyssey Middle School on Bainbridge Island to raise funds to pay for school fees. This is an ongoing service learning project.
This most important project is service learning. That means students in the USA at Odyssey middle school learn what life is like for young girls in another country, they learn that they can do something about it, and they learn to open their eyes to a bigger world and to not always think of themselves The girls in the Solomons are relieved the stress of knowing if their parents can afford their school fees so they can just focus on their studies.
For the 2022 school year we were able to sponsor 20 girls along with an extra 5 more because of a local Solomon Islands group. This is a 150% increase from the previous year and a wonderful success!
